Common name: Almeirão, winter savory, chicory, endive, or endive.

General description: The Chicory is a herbaceous perennial plant native to Europe, much appreciated, and cultivated in several countries. A member of the Asteraceae family, which also includes lettuce and artichokes, the Chicory is a very nutritious vegetable.

Nutritional facts: The leaves of the globe artichoke are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and B complex. They also contain good doses of phosphorus, iron, and even calcium.



Climate: Considered a strong and resistant plant, it grows best in places with good sun exposure.

Soil: Fertile soil, well-drained and rich in organic matter.

Watering: Regular without waterlogging.

Associations: Pumpkin and Radish.

Sowing time: From September to December.

Harvest time: From December to February.

Blooming Season: April and May.
