Scientific name: Eruca sativa

Common name: Arugula, Rucola, Persian mustard.

General description: It is native to the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, cultivated by the Romans, and described then by Virgil as an aphrodisiac herb. Probably because of this, its cultivation was forbidden in monasteries during the Middle Ages.

Preferred for its leaves, the flowers, young fruit and seeds are also edible.


We have the versatile, fast-growing variety 'Ruca'.


Nutritional facts: Rich in proteins, vitamins A and C, and minerals, especially potassium, calcium, and iron. It also contains omega 3, and a few calories.


 


GROWING CONDITIONS


Climate: Mild because at low temperatures, it blooms early. In the cooler months, prefers direct sun and partial shade in summer.

Soil: Well-drained, fertile, and rich in organic matter.

Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soaked.

Associations: With Coriander, and in crop rotation should follow Liliaceae: Garlic, Leek, Onion, Spinach.

Sowing time: From February to May, September, and October.

Harvest time: All year round, 40 to 65 days after planting.
